Beginning Again in 2010

Acts 2:14 says “But Peter stood up with the eleven, raised his voice and proclaimed to them…”. As the New Year gets underway, I am reminded that all of us have times in our lives when we have come through great disappointments and failures.  We all come to places where we just need to get over the past and begin again.  Perhaps the opening of the Book of Acts was such a time in Peter’s life.  He had left a career as a fisherman to follow Jesus.  He had seen Jesus crucified and buried and Peter had seen Jesus raise up from the grave.  Yet in Peter’s experience, he had also denied even knowing the One he had once claimed he would die defending.  Surely, Peter knew what it was to experience grief and disappointment for the Bible says of him after his denial of Christ that Peter “went out and wept bitterly.”  Have you ever been to that point in life when you look at your failure and you just break down and weep- bitterly weep?  Peter’s story could have been a tragic one if it had ended on that note.  Thanks be unto God, such is not the case!  In Acts 2:14 and following, we find a brand new beginning for this crusty old fisherman.  “But Peter” captures the since of transition.  What happened up to that point will prove much less significant than what happens the rest of Peter’s life.  “But Peter STOOD UP” lets us see that this once weak willed man who denied even knowing Christ had found a new sense of courage and boldness!  This time instead of cowering in the distance and denying his association with the Lord, Peter stood up!  “But Peter stood up and RAISED HIS VOICE”.  This time, Peter was heard.  He was not a just a bystander, letting events take what ever direction they might.  He took a stand and let his voice be heard for the glory of God.  “But Peter stood up and raised his voice and PROCLAIMED to them”.  Peter began to carry out the Great Commandment and to fulfill the Great Commission.  He proclaimed the Truth of the Risen Christ!  What a new beginning!  What a wonderful start of a glorious life useful and fruitful in the Kingdom of God!  May the Lord grant you and me to begin again in two thousand and ten with boldness and courage to stand up, let our voice be heard, and proclaim Jesus to the world!
