By Faith…

Hebrews 11 lists a number of achievements realized by those who walked by faith.  Again and again in the verses of chapter 11, we see that phrase “by faith…“.  In 2 Corinthians 5:7, the Holy Spirit inspired the writer to insert the parenthetical statement “for we walk by faith, not by sight.”  One of the foundational precepts of salvation itself is tied directly to faith (Ephesians 2:8 “…by grace you are saved through faith…“).  Clearly, our lives are to be linked securely with faith.  “By faith”, that is through the use of and with the application of faith, we are to “…lay aside every weight and the sin that so easily besets us, and run with endurance the race that lies before us.”  In my time with the Lord this morning, I am renewed in my understanding that my journey through this world is to be different from the journey of someone who does not know God.  I am called to walk, to live, to “run with endurance” by faith!  When I can’t see the outcome; when I am uncertain of the cost; when the burden is heavy; whatever the circumstance I am called by His Word to live and act, and eventually overcome by faith.  As I reflect on the import and meaning of this reality, I noticed that Hebrews 11 does not present the one-sided, always victorious, always positive picture it is often used to preach.  In fact, in verses 35 through 37 it clearly reveals that “…by faith…some were tortured…others experienced mocking and scourgings…bonds and imprisonment…were stoned, they were sawed in two, they died by the sword…destitute, afflicted, and mistreated.”  So “by faith” is not always going to be easy.  Nevertheless, when we choose to live and persevere by faith, we please God.  In fact, without faith it is impossible to please God (Hebrews 11:6).  May God help me, and you, to renew our commitment to truly live by faith.
