Proverbs Challenge, Day 7

“…He did not know it would cost his life.”

There is a classic sermon on sin that says “Sin will take you further than you planned to go; keep you longer than you planned to stay; and cost you more than you planned to pay”.  In this seventh chapter of Proverbs, the writer uses the illustration of someone who falls victim to a seductress.  The chapter recounts how a seductive woman with wrongful desire and intent lures an unsuspecting victim to commit adultery with her and then tells us the result of falling into the trap.  This latter portion of the twenty-third verse drives home the point that the penalty of sin is death:  “…He did not know it would cost his life.”  As I reflected on this lesson today, I was reminded of how sin itself is like the woman described as the seductress.  Sin often appears alluring and tempting, inviting us to participate.  Yet the result is much the same as described in this allegory.  Let us all take heed to the wise counsel provided and turn not aside when tempted!
