Proverbs Challenge, Day 22

“Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.”

So many people take this verse to mean that if you send a child to church and you tell them how they should live, that the child will not stray from those teachings.  This creates a problem when children that were sent to church and that were told one thing but witnessed another thing with their eyes do not behave as expected when they grow older.  The proverb actually tells us that when we train a child in the way he should go he will not depart from it when he is old.  To train a child, we must first be proficient ourselves.  We must model the behavior we want the child to emulate.  Our model must be consistent so that the child is not confused.  Then, when the child has learned from us through first hand experience and has witnessed the consistent testimony of our practice, the child will have ingrained values that will last a lifetime.
