Two Simple Words

“But God”- don’t you just love those words? Just two words. Just simple words. Yet those two words can often change things dramatically. For example, there is the story of Joseph in Genesis. Joseph’s brothers sold him into slavery and told his father that Joseph had died. They had tried to rid themselves of Joseph and for all intents and purposes thought they had killed him, or at least sentenced him to permanent banishment from their lives. Years later, those same brothers find themselves in Joseph’s presence and he has the power of life and death over them. Joseph speaks to them about their actions and plans and says something like “You meant it for evil, BUT GOD meant it for good”. Two simple words and yet the meaning and import of those words are significant!
Today, I am reflecting on another verse of the Bible that contains those two words- Psalm 73:26. The verse reads “My heart and my flesh may fail; BUT GOD is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.” Once again, the two simple words completely change the situation from the gloom and despair of aging and growing weaker to the joy and consolation of knowing that God will forever sustain us! Thank God for those two simple words! Grace and blessings in Christ, our Lord.
