The Hour Has Come

In the Holman Christian Standard Bible, verse 23 of the twelfth chapter of the Gospel of John says “Jesus replied to them, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.”” In its context the verse speaks to the time when Jesus will be crucified, will die for our sins and will then be raised from the dead and will ascend into heaven to His Father’s side. The event will fulfill the promise found in John 12:32 [“And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all men to Myself.”]. Notice the phrase in verse 23 “the hour has come”.

God had an appointed time in history for the life, death and resurrection of Christ. Galatians 4:4 and 5 tell us that “when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those under the law, so that we might receive the adoption as sons.” That hour came when God would glorify Christ through the event that would mark the full payment for our sin debt. Jesus, in dying on the Cross as the Lamb of God which takes away the sins of the world, would declare “it (the required payment for sin) is finished” [John 19:30]. Surely, the Cross stands today as a reminder that “the hour had come”!

As I reflect on that critical hour in the story of Christ and our redemption through His death on the Cross, I sense that once again “the hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified”. This time, though, I feel that is time for God’s people to glorify Christ. The Bible tells us that God has glorified His Son because of the humility and obedience that took Christ from the Throne of Heaven to the manger as baby wrapped in swaddling clothes to the Cross of Calvary as the Lamb of God [see Philippians 2:8-10]. Now, it is our turn! If we understand the sacrifice that Christ made for us; if we understand the extent of suffering He bore on our behalf; if we believe that God has raised Him from the dead, then it is time for US to glorify Christ! The hour has come for God’s people to demonstrate with our life and our action and our faithfulness that Christ is indeed exalted above everything in our life.

I pray that God will help me renew my commitment to lift up the Name of Jesus. The hour has come!
