Be Not Conformed: Be Transformed

The New American Standard Bible version of Romans 12:2 says “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.” These words, written under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit by the Apostle Paul to the church, clearly call for those who claim Christ as Lord and Savior to “not be” something as well as “to be” something else. The words call us to “..not be conformed to this world”. Instead, we are challenged to “ transformed by the renewing of your mind.” In February of 2013, I posted an entry about the word “transformed” possibly being a reference to being “shaped by the Cross” (see blog entry Transformed, February 11, 2013). Today I want to focus on the first challenge: “do not be conformed to this world”.
In today’s culture, it seems that the church (at least as an institution) is becoming “conformed” to this world. We have changed our worship style. We have sought to find names for our churches that are more appealing and “friendly” to outsiders. We have eliminated some church meetings and modified or adjusted those that remain to make them more “convenient”. We have often made sanctuaries appear more like theaters and entertainment centers than houses of worship. Stages and platforms have replaced altars and pulpits. We have decided we can worship better dressed casually than we can when we “dress up”.
Admittedly, not all of these changes are bad. In fact, some good has come from most of them. The point I want to make is that I am concerned that change in the church is sometimes driven by pressure and influence from the world. We can be made to fit the image this world wants us to fit rather than remaining faithful to the God who saved us, if we are not careful. I am praying that God will draw me back to being “transformed” (that is, shaped by the Cross of Christ) rather than conformed. If you sense God calling you as well, prayerfully consider joining our study “Counter Culture” beginning August 16, 2015. We will have both Sunday evening sessions and Thursday evening sessions. To receive more information, post a comment to this blog. I look forward to hearing from you.

  1. This sounds like a study I could use. Wish I could be there.

    • Hello, Sister! The study does promise to be a good one and we are excited to be part of it. Please pray for the Lord to use the study as a catalyst for revival. Our hope is that each week we will have a thought from the study posted on the blog, so you can at least participate through comments to the blog! Praying for God’s best in your life.
