When, Not If

When you pass through the waters….when you walk through the fire…

When the fiery ordeal comes to you…

When you meet trials of various kinds…

These phrases from Isaiah 43:2; 1 Peter 4:12; and James 1:2, respectively, use the word “when” rather than the word “if”.  How could we miss it?  Why do we, as followers of Christ, find it so surprising when we face trials, pass through deep waters and fire, or meet testing times in our life?  After all, the bible seems to consistently warn us that we will encounter such difficulties.  I am reflecting today on how God has challenged us to remember that He is with us; to take courage in the fact that He has all things under control.  You and I must grow more accustomed to the reality that hard times, difficult times, trials and tests are indeed going to come our way – even when we are walking with Christ by faith.  Take another look at those passages.  Notice that He said “when”, not “if”.
