Mercy Triumphs Over Judgment

There is a phrase at the end of James 2:13 that gives me great joy and comfort.  It says simply “mercy triumphs over judgment”.  How wonderful to know God’s mercy is the “triumph” over sin’s judgment!

Many have played a card game called “trump” in which a particular suit of cards takes precedence over all other cards of all other suits in the deck.  The term “trump card” has come to mean pretty much anything that automatically or of certainty prevails over all other things.  When the “trump card” is played, it overpowers or defeats all others.  That what God did for us in Christ!

In the spiritual sense, our sin and separation from God called for death with no reprieve.  No flesh could be justified or made righteous in the sight of the All-Righteous God.  Works of the law could not satisfy the demanding judgment against our rebellious nature.  The pay-day of sin is death in all cases: except when God played His “trump card”!  The life and death of Christ fully satisfied the judgment required for all sin and God’s mercy triumphed over sin when God raised Christ from the dead.

Because of God’s wonderful mercy, you and I are able to live eternally when we are redeemed by the blood of Christ.  Mercy (manifest in Christ’s propitiation for our sin) triumphs over judgment!  Glory to God in the highest!
