Proverbs Challenge, October 2016 – Day Nineteen

Reading Proverbs 19:17 (One who is gracious to a poor man lends to the Lord,
And He will repay him for his good deed
[NASB]) reminded me today of how Jesus taught His disciples that what they did for one of the least of God’s children, they did for Jesus (see Matthew 25:31-46).  How often do we pass by a poor man without a thought of lending a helping hand or providing for his needs?  I know it can be challenging in this day of so many with an entitlement mentality.  Still, God’s Word is God’s Word.  There is no escaping the fact that God has gone on record saying the one who is gracious to a poor man is actually lending (being gracious) to the Lord.  What if I took the attitude that the poor person God brings into my path is actually Jesus in disguise?

Proverbs 19 is filled with wisdom, providing instruction for the willing to learn how to live as God would have us live.  It includes a verse that reminds us that a man has many plans in his heart but it the Lord’s purpose (counsel) that stands (Proverbs 19:21).  Today, the verse that grabs me and seems to call me to a higher standard of living than I have routinely known is verse 17.  May God help me to remember to be gracious (providing unmerited benefit) to the poor God brings into my life.
